Understanding Date Ranges
What the time ranges mean in the 'Date Range' section of the Context Pane within the Analytics Editor
There are three types of date ranges in the Analytics Editor:
- Calendar Ranges: Account for time easily in reference to the current date and time. These ranges include Today, Current Week, and Past 30 Days for example.
- Fixed Ranges: Create a range based around an unchanging time frame. If you're concerned about a particular time period, this one is for you.
- Relative Ranges: Create a range that moves with time. These ranges are useful if you want a time range that isn't included in the Calendar Ranges. They are also useful for ranges that are relative to a different time frame. For example, a time range between 30 days ago and 15 days ago.
Calendar Ranges
The Today range serves as a range of time referring to the current day. This range will pull the data from midnight (12:00 AM or 0000) to the current time of day (based on the Completion date, date created, or date updated)
Yesterday refers to the previous day of data (based on the Completion date, date created, or date updated). This will reference from the previous day's beginning to end (midnight-midnight).
The Current Hour range gives information from the current time, to the last hour. For example, if it is 12:18, the analysis will display the past 18 minutes of data.
Current Week gives insight into data created between the current time, and the very start of the week (Monday at Midnight).
Similarly, Current Month refers to the data between the beginning of the current month, and the current day and time. (based on the Completion date, date created, or date updated)
The Last 60 Minutes filter takes in the rolling data from the past hour.
The range for Last 7 days refers to the rolling last 7 days from the current date and time.
Last 30 Days refers to the past 30 days relative to the current date and time.
Fixed Ranges
If you are interested in a certain set of data, you can select the Fixed: Date Range. Within this option, you can select the beginning and end of the range you are interested in viewing. In this case, the analysis is checking for data between the beginning of the day on 12/05/2019, and the end of the day on 12/09/2019.
Another fixed option allows to filter dates before the date set here. In this example, Fixed: All Dates Before will display all data prior to 12/09/2019.
Fixed: All Dates After displays data that comes after the selected date.
There is also a Filter option to view only the data set by the Week Number that the completion was logged.
Relative Ranges
Relative: Date Range is an extremely useful date range option. This option allows you to set the amount of time the analysis checks for, as well as the time relative to the current day. In this example, the analysis filters data to display only information in the time between 7 days ago, and 3 days ago. You could expand this to check the previous month (between 60 days ago and 30 days ago) for example, which shifts as time progresses.
It is important to note that hours are also an available setting, opening up the possibility for the past 24 hours, or any time period that may be important but not included in other ranges.
Relative: All Dates Before will allow the data to shift as time progresses, unlike the fixed option. In this case, the data will only display data from before 3 days ago, relative to the current day.
Relative: All Dates After filters data to only display data which came in after X hours/days/weeks/months. In this example, the analysis will only display data that has came in within the past 3 days. This data will also shift as time progresses.
This range can also be useful to establish analyses for the past 7 days (1 week), or past 365 days (1 year).
Finally, the last range available is All Time. Fairly clear, this option displays all data that has been collected.
